**Tanjung Lesung**, located in the Pandeglang Regency on the western tip of Java, has emerged as a jewel in Banten’s tourism crown. Situated approximately 160 kilometers (99 miles) from Jakarta, Indonesia’s bustling capital, this coastal paradise is easily accessible within a 3-4 hour drive. Renowned for its picturesque beach resorts, a 15-kilometer stretch of pristine white sand coastline, and vibrant marine life, Tanjung Lesung offers an idyllic escape for snorkeling, diving, and fishing enthusiasts.
A Strategic Special Economic Zone for Tourism
The Indonesian government officially launched Tanjung Lesung as a **Special Economic Zone (SEZ)** for tourism in 2012, with operations commencing on February 23, 2015. This designation underscores its strategic importance in boosting national tourism. The government’s vision for Tanjung Lesung is ambitious, aiming to attract one million domestic and international tourists by 2019, a goal supported by significant infrastructure development. It stands as one of 50 national tourism destinations identified by the Ministry of Tourism and is among 10 priority tourist areas slated for accelerated development.
Collaboration with private developers, notably PT Banten West Java TDC (Tourism Development Corporation) and PT Tanjung Lesung Leisure Industry (subsidiaries of PT Jababeka Tbk), has been instrumental in driving the SEZ’s growth. These partnerships are crucial for developing the necessary infrastructure and facilities to accommodate the projected influx of visitors.
Enhancing Accessibility and Accommodation
To facilitate easier access, the Indonesian government has heavily invested in transportation infrastructure. The construction of the 83.9 km (52.1 mi) Serang-Panimbang toll road, connecting to the existing Jakarta-Merak toll road, is a key project. This toll road aims to reduce travel time from Jakarta to just 2.5 hours. While Section I (Serang-Rangkas Bitung) has been operational since November 2021, sections II and III are still under construction, with the entire project targeted for completion by 2024.
Beyond road access, plans are also underway to construct an airport and a dedicated tourist port to cater to foreign visitors and cruise ship stopovers. The revival of existing train lines is also being explored to further enhance connectivity to the Tanjung Lesung SEZ.
To meet the target of one million annual visitors, significant efforts are being made to expand accommodation options. PT Jababeka Tbk and other local and international investors are developing a range of hotels and resorts within the SEZ. These developments are not only providing diverse lodging choices but also creating employment opportunities for the local population.
