Serang, The Banten Post – Banten households face a year-end budget squeeze as food-price pressure and the cost of reaching holiday destinations compete for the same income, with supply routes and travel bookings the key variables to watch.
The warning is not that every staple has already jumped in Banten. It is that demand typically rises around Christmas and New Year, while the province relies on supplies from outside the region for several commodities. That makes transport disruptions a direct risk to household food bills as families also set aside money for journeys.
Why could chilies and rice drive the next increase?
Nationally, the latest warning is concentrated in rice and chilies. The National Food Agency said it was watching both commodities ahead of the holiday period and stressed that distribution, particularly shipments by sea, could determine whether available supplies reach consumers. Citing data presented at an Oct. 19 inflation-control meeting, Bisnis.com reported food inflation at 5.03%, while large red chili, curly red chili and bird’s-eye chili prices were up 25.8%, 22% and 5.07%, respectively.
National Food Agency Secretary-General Ito Hediarto said in an official statement quoted by Bisnis.com that chili supplies were sufficient, but distribution still needed attention. The agency said it was using food-distribution facilitation to move supplies from surplus areas to places facing shortages. Bulog also said it had been directed to distribute October-December 2026 food aid, while the agency reported 4.56 million tons of rice stock as of Oct. 21.
What does Banten’s own plan cover?
In Serang, Banten Regional Secretary Deden Apriandi said the provincial government and its regional inflation team had prepared stronger stocks and reserves for rice, chilies, shallots, eggs and meat, alongside market-price monitoring and cheap-food operations across the province’s eight regencies and cities. His remarks were made at a Dec. 10, 2025 inflation meeting and reported by Antara.
Bank Indonesia Banten Deputy Head Rawindra Ardiansah said Banten still depends on outside supplies for some commodities other than rice. “Because the price-forming factor is the logistics route,” Rawindra said, according to Antara. That makes the route to market as important as the amount of food in warehouses.
How should travelers protect the holiday budget?
For the Merak-Bakauheni crossing, the latest detailed ASDP public preparation notice covered Nataru 2025/2026, not the 2026/2027 season. ASDP advised passengers to reserve through Ferizy before arriving, said there would be no ticket sales at the port, and planned as many as 33 ships at peak periods, with the busiest crossings forecast for Dec. 21-23 and Dec. 28-29, 2025. Families planning this year’s trip should verify the new sailing timetable, fare and reservation rules directly with ASDP before paying.
The practical checklist is simple: compare the current prices of rice, chilies, eggs and cooking oil in the local market; check whether a cheap-food operation is scheduled nearby; reserve only through the official ferry channel; and consult BMKG for weather and sea conditions before departure. Google Trends could not provide a reliable Banten search-volume reading for “harga pangan,” “Banten” or “Nataru,” so no trend number is presented here. The measurable story remains the same: the final household burden will depend on both food distribution and the cost and timing of travel.
