South Tangerang (Tangsel) is building sports momentum. As the city prepares to host multiple events for the Banten Provincial Sports Week (Porprov VII) in 2026, municipal authorities have launched an accelerated program to upgrade venues, improve transport links and strengthen community readiness — all aimed at delivering a safe, modern and lasting sports legacy for residents.
City officials say the focus is squarely on infrastructure readiness. Existing municipal stadiums, indoor sports halls and athletics tracks across Ciputat, Serpong, Pondok Aren and Pamulang are in line for improvements that include resurfacing tracks, upgrading grass and artificial turf, replacing seating, adding floodlighting, and renovating locker rooms, medical and anti-doping facilities. Several indoor arenas will receive electrical and air-conditioning overhauls to meet competition standards for volleyball, badminton, futsal and martial arts.
“We are treating this not only as an event-ready upgrade but as long-term investment in Tangsel’s sporting life,” said a senior official from the Tangsel Youth and Sports Office. “Work plans prioritize athlete safety, accessibility for people with disabilities, and media and broadcast capabilities so the games can reach wider audiences.”
Practical upgrades are being paired with logistical planning. The city reports coordinated efforts with provincial authorities and KONI Banten to ensure venues meet technical requirements for competition and broadcasting: electronic scoreboards, timing systems for athletics and swimming, secure storage for equipment, dedicated warm-up zones, and press centers with reliable internet and power back-up. Security coordination with local police and emergency services is being integrated into venue designs, while traffic management plans are being developed to ease peak-period travel around key sites.
Transport and accommodation are also in focus. Tangsel’s strategic location near Jakarta and major toll roads means improvements to feeder roads, signage, parking facilities, and temporary shuttle services between transit hubs and competition venues are being planned. City planners are working with hotels, boarding houses and community homestay initiatives to expand athlete and official accommodation capacity while promoting local businesses.
Community engagement has become a key pillar. Local schools and sports clubs are being invited to use improved facilities for training and to take part in volunteer programs during the games. Coaches and young athletes in Tangsel are already reporting heightened enthusiasm. “Access to better equipment and revamped tracks helps our athletes train at a higher level,” said a local coach. “It’s inspiring for children to see their city preparing for a provincial event.”
Economic and social spin-offs are central to the city’s message. Officials emphasize that investments in sports infrastructure will stimulate jobs in construction, hospitality, transportation and services before and during the games. Long-term, upgraded facilities are expected to increase community usage, host regional tournaments, and boost local sports programs.
To ensure accountability and timely delivery, Tangsel’s project teams have defined phased milestones, with a target to complete major structural works by late 2025. That schedule would allow for testing and commissioning through trial events in early 2026, giving organizers time to fine-tune operations and logistics.
Sustainability considerations have been folded into planning where possible: energy-efficient lighting, rainwater management for pitches, and waste-reduction measures at venues are among the practices being explored. The city also plans to publicize volunteer and employment opportunities through neighborhood outreach to maximize local participation.
