Merak, The Banten Post – Anyer, Carita and Tanjung Lesung should prepare for the 2026 year-end travel surge by linking daily weather checks with traffic staging, parking capacity and advance visitor information, rather than waiting for congestion or dangerous sea conditions to develop.
The advice follows the experience of the 2025-26 Christmas and New Year period, when officials treated the Merak-Bakauheni corridor as a critical mobility point and prepared for heavy travel while monitoring extreme-weather risks. In a Dec. 22, 2025 statement, state ferry operator ASDP said more than 100 million people were expected to travel nationally during the holiday period. It also reported that the Merak, Ciwandan and BBJ Bojonegara posts handled 128 vessel trips and 8,905 vehicles on Dec. 21, 2025.
Why should coastal operators make weather checks the first step?
BMKG’s Nataru briefing said the Sunda Strait could see moderate waves of 1.25 to 2.5 meters in December 2025 and January 2026. The agency also warned that tidal flooding could continue around mid-December in Banten. Its guidance urged travelers to refresh information through official BMKG channels, including the InfoBMKG application, rather than rely on unverified social-media posts.
That means hotels, beach managers, boat operators and local authorities should assign staff to check BMKG’s coastal forecasts before opening water activities and should have a clear process for pausing or rescheduling them. Travelers should check the forecast for Anyer and Carita, the waters around Pandeglang and the Sunda Strait before departure, then check again on the morning of a beach or boat trip.
How can Anyer and Carita prevent road queues from becoming a safety problem?
Police experience shows why the approach matters. In an evaluation of the 2021-22 Nataru operation, Banten traffic officials said holiday mobility peaked on two weekend periods and was concentrated along the tourism route from Anyer and Carita to Tanjung Lesung and onward to southern Lebak. Police used vehicle-flow engineering, including odd-even measures and selective opening and closing of routes, to manage crowding and visitor capacity.
For 2026, destination managers should publish parking locations, one-way or temporary traffic arrangements and emergency access routes before the holiday begins. They should coordinate with police, BPBD, SAR teams and health services, while hotels and restaurants report occupancy or parking pressure early enough for authorities to act. Visitors should confirm whether their accommodation has a reserved parking arrangement and avoid assuming that the shortest coastal route will be the fastest on peak days.
What should Tanjung Lesung do differently?
Tanjung Lesung offers a useful pressure-release option because Indonesia’s official tourism portal describes it as a large beachfront destination with resorts, water sports, cycling and other activities, about a four-hour drive from Jakarta. But its distance also makes fuel, medical access, communications and return-trip planning more important. Visitors should book accommodation and activities in advance, carry offline directions, and leave a weather-related time buffer.
ASDP’s previous holiday plan shows the value of flexibility: the operator used delaying systems at strategic points, maintained vehicle holding capacity in Merak and offered refund or rescheduling through Ferizy. A similar principle should guide the three destinations in 2026: publish live operating information, make capacity limits visible and give travelers a practical alternative when weather or roads deteriorate.
Before leaving, travelers should verify the latest BMKG forecast, police traffic notices, road conditions, accommodation confirmation and any beach or water-activity restrictions. No official 2026 visitor total or destination-specific surge forecast was available in the sources reviewed, so preparation should be based on live conditions rather than an assumed number of tourists.
