Fact-check: What the Merak ferry fire, Banten drought warnings and weather posts really show

Cilegon, The Banten Post – The KMP Batumandi ferry fire near Merak was real, but social-media posts should not be used to infer an unverified death toll, a confirmed cause or a general claim that Banten’s weather is uniformly dry and dangerous.

The incident helps explain the renewed online attention. Google Trends’ Indonesia Explore page for “Batumandi,” “Merak” and “Banten” was accessible when checked, but the page returned no numerical interest values in its text view. The verified timing is clear: the fire occurred on Oct. 20, and official police updates continued as the investigation and vessel recovery developed.

Were all passengers rescued?

Yes, the available early rescue accounts say the passengers were evacuated, while some injured people were taken for treatment. Anadolu Agency, citing rescue officials and the Jakarta Globe, reported that the vessel carried 420 passengers and 40 crew members and that all 460 people were evacuated. A Polda Banten written statement gave the manifest as 420 passengers and 89 vehicles, including 393 people travelling in vehicles and 27 pedestrians. The difference in presentation is a counting issue, not proof of a hidden casualty figure.

The Polda statement said evacuees were moved to safety at Merak’s Dock VI, while injured passengers were taken to Pulomerak Community Health Center and Krakatau Medika Hospital. It also said the fire began as the ferry approached Merak, about 700 meters from the dock. Readers should reject posts that add deaths or missing passengers without a new statement from police, Basarnas or the port authorities.

Did the ferry sink, and is the cause known?

The vessel later capsized at about 9 p.m. on Oct. 21, according to Polda Banten. Police said the stern sank farther after firefighting and the ship tilted before overturning. The report described suspected post-fire instability, not a final technical finding.

Police said investigators had interviewed 18 witnesses, including passengers, a bus driver, the engine-room chief and crew members. The cause remained under investigation, and officers had not yet conducted a full scene examination because the hull and interior were still dangerously hot. Any post claiming a confirmed cause should therefore be treated as unverified.

Does the fire prove Banten is in a drought?

No. BMKG’s Oct. 8 forecast said dry conditions still dominated nationally, with 70.59% of Indonesia recording low rainfall in late September. It linked the pattern to a very strong El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole, and warned that drought and land-fire risks could persist. The same bulletin listed Banten among areas that could receive moderate rain and warned of strong winds in the Oct. 9-11 and Oct. 12-15 periods.

That means drought risk and storm risk can coexist. BMKG also said local atmospheric dynamics could still produce moderate to very heavy rain, lightning and strong winds even during a generally dry season. For travel or emergency decisions, verify the latest BMKG forecast and warnings, Polda Banten updates, ASDP notices and Merak VTS or port information. A dramatic video, an old weather clip or an uncited passenger list is not a safety bulletin.
