DPRD Serang Holds Solemn Plenary to Mark Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, Calls for Renewed National Spirit
SERANG — The DPRD (Regional House of Representatives) of Kabupaten Serang convened a special plenary session yesterday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, bringing together elected officials, government executives, veterans, youth groups and community leaders in a ceremony that emphasized the importance of renewed nationalism and local action.
The plenary — attended by all factions of the DPRD, the Regent’s office, heads of SKPD (regional government agencies), representatives of veterans’ associations, and youth organizations such as Karang Taruna — opened with a reading of the Proclamation of Independence and a united rendition of the national anthem. The assembly hall was decorated with red-and-white bunting and banners bearing the slogan “Kemerdekaan untuk Kesejahteraan” (Independence for Prosperity), reflecting a local focus on translating patriotic sentiment into measurable improvements for Serang residents.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of DPRD Kabupaten Serang underscored that celebrating the 80th anniversary is not merely ceremonial but a call to tangible service. “National pride must be visible in the decisions we make in this chamber and in the actions we take in our villages and towns,” he said. “From strengthening coastal resilience in Anyer and supporting small and medium enterprises to improving education and health services across our sub-districts, our patriotism should be measured by the welfare of our people.”
Speeches during the plenary highlighted several recurring themes: unity in diversity (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika), the need to protect democratic institutions, and the role of the younger generation in carrying forward the founding ideals.
