LEBAK, The Banten Post – The remains of Somang village have re-emerged from Karian Reservoir in Indonesia’s Banten province after a prolonged dry spell drove down water levels, exposing house walls and the Al Mujahidin mosque.
Reuters photographed the exposed settlement on Oct. 23, showing motorists passing cracked ground and remnants of homes. The reservoir, in Lebak Regency, supplies raw water to surrounding areas including Jakarta. The images rapidly renewed interest in the site, which was submerged during construction of the reservoir project.
What did the drought expose?
The visible ruins include roofless house walls, water marks on the mosque and sections of the former settlement. CNN Indonesia reported that residents began leaving Somang in 2023 as the reservoir was filled. Other former settlements, including Karian, Susukan and Cibolang, were also affected by the project.
The official explanation is less dramatic than the images suggest. In a July 28 statement, the Cidanau Ciujung Cidurian River Basin Organization, known as BBWS C3, said parts of the former settlement lay upstream of the dam and had not been completely demolished after land acquisition. When the reservoir level falls naturally, those remaining structures can become visible again.
Dedi Yudha Lesmana, head of BBWS C3, said the reservoir’s water level had fallen about 80 centimeters from its normal elevation but remained within safe operating limits. “Saat ini tampungan Bendungan Karian masih aman untuk memenuhi kebutuhan air baku maupun irigasi. Penurunan muka air sekitar 80 sentimeter dari elevasi normal merupakan kondisi yang lazim terjadi pada musim kemarau dan masih berada dalam batas aman operasi waduk,” he said in the agency’s written statement.
How strong is the El Niño signal?
BMKG’s first-ten-day October atmospheric analysis recorded a three-month ENSO index of +3.08 for August-October, classifying the El Niño event as very strong. The agency also placed parts of Banten under its “alert” category for meteorological drought in the second ten-day period of October. BMKG said rainfall during the first ten days of October was below normal across 87.72% of the country’s monitored area.
In a separate Oct. 26 briefing, BMKG said the Niño 3.4 index for August-October was +3.05°C and warned that El Niño could persist into early 2027. The agency also said most areas would begin entering the rainy season in November and December, while stressing that timing would vary by region.
Why are people searching for Somang now?
Google Trends data accessible for Indonesia show a sharp, time-linked rise in searches for “Kampung Somang” and “Bendungan Karian.” In the past-12-month view, “Kampung Somang” reached 24 on the week of July 26 and 16 on the week of Oct. 25, while “Bendungan Karian” reached 100 and 34 in those same weeks. Trends values are indexed, not counts of searches, and the page warns that some related-query data do not have enough volume. The timing aligns with renewed images and reports of the exposed ruins, rather than proving a specific reason for every search.
Readers checking the story should distinguish the visible ruins from the reservoir’s operating status. BBWS C3 says Karian remains able to supply raw water and irrigation, while BMKG’s warnings indicate that drought conditions and rainfall forecasts can change by district. Further updates should be checked against the basin authority’s operating notices and BMKG’s local warnings.
