TANGERANG — The race to determine the next Speaker of the Tangerang City Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) is gaining public attention following the death of former Speaker Rusdi Alam. The Golkar Party has opened a selection process to determine his successor, with six cadres entering the contest.
The registration process was held from August 11 to 13, 2026. The six candidates are Zamaludin, Supiani, Samsuni, Kosasih, Mustofa Kamaludin and Saiful Milah.
Among the six names, Zamaludin has emerged as one of the candidates attracting significant attention. The 65-year-old politician is not only a sitting member of the Tangerang City DPRD but is also regarded as one of Golkar’s senior cadres. Born on February 1, 1961, Zamaludin has accumulated extensive experience in both party organizations and legislative affairs.
Zamaludin said he was fully prepared to participate in the selection process. However, he stressed that his decision to run was not driven merely by an ambition to hold office, but by what he described as a responsibility to ensure the continuity of the DPRD’s institutional duties following Rusdi Alam’s passing.
“If I am asked why I am taking part in this process, it is because I feel that, as a party cadre and a member of the DPRD, I have a responsibility. After the passing of Mr. Rusdi Alam, there must be someone who continues the institutional duties of the DPRD,” Zamaludin, chairman of the Golkar Party’s Daily Executive Board in Tangerang City, told reporters on Friday (August 14, 2026).
He said his experience in organizational and legislative affairs was one of the main considerations behind his decision to enter the race.
“I believe I have experience, both in organizations and in the legislature. That experience can certainly be a valuable asset if I am eventually entrusted with leading the DPRD,” he said.
Despite his seniority, Zamaludin said he did not consider himself automatically entitled to the position. He emphasized that all candidates have their own strengths and that the final decision rests with the party through its established selection mechanism.
“For me, seniority does not mean feeling that I am the most entitled to the position. It is simply one part of the experience that can be taken into consideration. Every cadre in the race has their own capabilities and strengths,” he said.
Zamaludin, who previously served as secretary of the Tangerang City Golkar Party for two terms, also expressed his willingness to compete fairly with the other candidates.
“I respect all of my colleagues who are taking part in this process. We are all Golkar cadres, and we all have a responsibility to the party and the people of Tangerang City,” said Zamaludin, who currently serves as chairman of the Tangerang City DPRD Honorary Body.
The Golkar Party’s selection process will assess candidates based on several indicators before narrowing the field to three names to be submitted to the party’s Central Executive Board (DPP).
The assessment includes capacity, capability and seniority, as well as the party’s PDLT criteria — achievement, dedication, loyalty and a clean record.
Zamaludin welcomed the criteria, saying the future Speaker must possess not only political capabilities but also the ability to lead the DPRD as an institution.
“When it comes to the criteria, I leave that to the selection team. Clearly, capacity, capability, experience, loyalty and track record should all be taken into consideration,” said Zamaludin, who previously served as chairman of the Tangerang City DPRD faction from 2019 to 2024.
He said he was ready to accept whatever decision the party makes.
“If I am entrusted with the position, I am ready to carry out the responsibility. But if the party decides to appoint another cadre, I will respect and support that decision. For me, the interests of the party and the people are more important than personal interests,” said Zamaludin, who is also a member of the DPRD’s Budget Committee.
Meanwhile, political observer and former spokesman for Tangerang Mayor Sachrudin during the 2024 mayoral election, Imron Hamami, said Zamaludin was a figure who deserved serious consideration in the selection process.
Imron said Zamaludin’s seniority, organizational experience and legislative track record gave him significant advantages over other potential candidates.
“From the perspective of seniority, experience and his position within the party, Zamaludin is indeed one of the figures who should be considered,” Imron said.
He added that leading the DPRD requires more than simply holding a senior position within a political party. The Speaker, he said, must be able to lead the institution, communicate effectively with political stakeholders and understand the dynamics of local government.
“The Speaker of the DPRD is not simply about holding a position. It requires the ability to lead the institution, build political communication, understand the dynamics of government and maintain institutional relations,” he said.
A similar assessment was voiced by Tiba Yuda Laksana, an activist and former chairman of the Tangerang branch of the Islamic Students Association (HMI) for the 2018–2019 period.
Tiba recalled his interactions with Zamaludin during his time leading HMI and described the senior Golkar politician as an open and approachable figure.
“Back when I was chairman of HMI in Tangerang in 2018, he was very open to discussion and was able to build relationships with senior figures, both within HMI and within the Golkar Party itself,” Tiba said.
Based on his experience interacting with Zamaludin, Tiba said he believed the politician was highly qualified to lead the Tangerang City DPRD.
“In my opinion, H. Zamaludin is highly qualified to become chairman of the Tangerang City DPRD and succeed the late H. Rusdi Alam, who was also our senior,” he said.
