Cilegon, The Banten Post – The fire aboard KMP Batumandi near Merak Port exposed both the strength of Indonesia’s emergency response and the unresolved safety questions that could determine whether western Java’s vital Java-Sumatra logistics link is truly resilient.
What happened aboard KMP Batumandi?
The ferry was approaching Pier VI in Cilegon on Oct. 20 after sailing from Bakauheni, Lampung, when sparks were seen at the stern on the upper vehicle deck. The Banten Port Authority said the first report came at about 4:15 p.m. The vessel was near Merak Besar Island when the fire spread and passengers were evacuated.
Police said the official manifest listed 420 passengers and 89 vehicles. Passengers were moved to KMP Royce 1, while injured people were taken to Pulomerak Community Health Center and Krakatau Medika Hospital. A police post was later established at Pier VI to help people who lost valuables or documents.
“The surviving passengers are currently being accommodated at Pier VI of Merak Port,” said Senior Superintendent Maruli Ahiles Hutapea, Banten Police’s public relations chief, in a written statement reported by the Indonesian National Police news portal. ASDP said it arranged onward transport, including overnight buses for passengers heading toward Greater Jakarta.
How did the port keep the corridor open?
ASDP said ferry services continued after the incident, with operations redirected through the Express 2 Pier. The company advised travelers to follow on-site instructions and use its 191 contact center for verified updates.
The wider Merak system already has tools for absorbing shocks. During high-demand periods, ASDP has used delaying systems at road and rest-area buffer zones, routed some heavy logistics vehicles through BBJ Bojonegara, and coordinated operations through a Port Operation Control Center. Banten police have also described using holding areas such as Proper Area, Tajima and Pier 7, with Ciwandan and BBJ Harbor available as diversion options when weather or congestion disrupts the main route.
Those measures matter because Merak is not only a passenger crossing. It is a strategic gateway for trucks, buses and supply chains between Java and Sumatra. But the available public statements do not establish that every contingency measure was activated after the Batumandi fire, or that the incident caused a sustained regional logistics shutdown. The practical test is whether traffic can be separated, buffered and rerouted without shifting risk onto surrounding roads and smaller ports.
What must investigators and operators answer next?
The fire’s cause remained under investigation in the latest official and newsroom reports. ASDP President Director Heru Widodo said the company would cooperate with authorities and provide updates based on on-site verification. The initial account suggested the fire began near the stern or engine-room area, but authorities had not confirmed the cause.
That leaves a clear accountability list: the ignition point, the vessel’s maintenance and seaworthiness history, the performance of alarms and firefighting systems, the handling of vehicles and cargo, and the timeline from detection to evacuation. Sofwan Dedy Ardyanto, a House of Representatives Commission V member, also called for an investigation and compensation for passengers’ lost belongings.
Readers should verify any later claim against the port authority, Ministry of Transportation, Basarnas, police and ASDP releases. They should also check whether investigators publish corrective recommendations, whether passenger-loss claims are catalogued and paid, and whether Merak’s alternative-port and buffer-zone plans are tested beyond peak-season exercises. The evacuation was completed safely; resilience will be measured by what changes before the next emergency.
