Cesium-137 emergency ends in Cikande: What Serang residents should know now

SERANG, The Banten Post – Indonesia has ended the emergency-response phase for Cesium-137 contamination at the Modern Cikande industrial area, but monitoring, health screening and follow-up controls remain in place for residents and workers in Serang Regency.

The Coordinating Ministry for Food announced the decision on Oct. 19 after an integrated response that included radiation surveys, decontamination and environmental monitoring. The ministry said inspections on Sept. 24 at 12 previously affected locations found dose rates below the applicable threshold and no new contamination.

Does the announcement mean all of Serang is clear?

No. The government’s announcement concerns the Modern Cikande industrial area and its controlled response zone, not every neighborhood in Serang Regency. The ministry said industrial activity could return to normal because the affected area was considered under control, while the task force would continue follow-up measures under each agency’s authority.

Earlier zoning guidance shows why residents should continue following signs, barriers and instructions from officials. In October 2025, the environment minister said authorities had mapped potential radiation exposure within a 5-kilometer area and would prioritize the red zone before the yellow zone. He said movement restrictions were intended to prevent direct exposure and that only a limited number of nearby homes, rather than the entire area, would require evacuation.

Those earlier restrictions should not be treated as a new blanket order. Residents should instead verify any current access, work or relocation instruction with local authorities and avoid entering marked restricted areas. They should not handle suspected contaminated scrap, soil or equipment themselves.

What has happened to people who may have been exposed?

The ministry said the Health Ministry examined 9,950 people and detected internal Cesium-137 contamination in 11 of them. Those people received Prussian Blue treatment and continued health monitoring; officials reported their condition as good and said no new cases had been found.

Cesium-137 is a man-made radionuclide. Reuters reported that authorities linked the Cikande contamination to a metal-processing facility and that radioactive scrap could release particles during smelting. Earlier BAPETEN field reports described dose measurements, soil sampling, removal of contaminated material and transfer of sources to interim storage at designated locations, including residential sites.

Why is the subject being searched again?

Google Trends was accessible as a public exploration page, but no verifiable current Cesium-137 trend value was available for publication. The timing of the renewed discussion is clear from the record: the government’s emergency-ending announcement followed a year of concern that began after Cesium-137 was detected in Indonesian shrimp processed in Cikande and flagged by U.S. authorities. The issue also affects public health, industrial access and export safeguards, giving residents and businesses reason to check the latest official notices.

For now, the clearest message for people near Cikande is that the emergency phase has ended, not that oversight has stopped. Residents should check announcements from BAPETEN, the Health Ministry, the environment authorities and Serang local government for any location-specific instructions, and seek medical advice if they believe they had direct contact with a controlled site.
